Music and Us

Exploring music from other cultures was a surprisingly interesting experience. I usually stick to R&B, rap, and similar genres, so stepping outside of my comfort zone felt refreshing. As I listened to different styles and sounds, I found myself drawn to the unique rhythms, instruments, and emotions that each culture expressed through music. Some of the songs I discovered were so good they made it into my personal playlist, which I didn’t expect at all. This process really opened my ears to how diverse and powerful music can be, no matter where it comes from or what language it’s in.

I don’t truly have a favorite Spanish artist, but I’ve grown to like Spanish music and Latin rap a lot. Cris MJ, and Floyymenor seem to pop up in almost every track I turn out to be playing, so they’ve clearly stood out to me. I genuinely began listening to Spanish tracks once I met my girlfriend; she introduced me to it, and at the beginning, I’d play it simply to make her feel more comfortable. Over time, though, I absolutely started to enjoy it myself. I still haven’t admitted that to her; however, now I find myself playing it even if she’s no longer around. (Modern Spanish)

Another culture I really enjoy is Jamaican music, especially reggae. Bob Marley stands out the most to me; his music is motivational, heartwarming, and always has a positive message. One of my favorite songs is “Three Little Birds.” It’s simple but powerful, and it always lifts my mood no matter what I’m going through. He didn’t just make great songs; he helped spread reggae music all around the world. His music brings a sense of peace and unity that still connects with people today. Bob Marley truly left behind a legacy that continues to inspire. (traditional and modern Jamaican)

I don’t really listen to K-pop at all, but there’s one song that really caught my attention, “Cupid” by Fifty Fifty, a Korean girl group. Even though I’m not into the genre as a whole, this song is definitely a banger. It’s super catchy, and the melody just sticks with you. I actually first heard it on TikTok, and I couldn't get it off my FYP, so I just took that as a sign. Eventually, I added it to my playlist, even though I don’t usually listen to music in other languages. I’m pretty sure it was also really popular in America for a while. I still don’t quite understand how people listen to K-pop every day, but I guess to each their own. That one song is heat, not going to lie. (Modern South Korean)

My last one is Chinese classical music, This is so relaxing, and the melodies and instrumentals are tuff. I first noticed these instrumentals in a famous American rap song called Who Think You Foolin by Gunna, the most beautiful sound you can hear. Then I realized that's all of Chinese classical music. I don't listen to this on the daily, but when I'm just trying to chill and relax in my room, this gets played. After some research, I realized the main instrument used in most of these songs is the guzheng, a kind of violin but box-shaped. I don't know if it's different, but I haven't heard anyone with this instrument miss yet. (Traditional Chinese)

Assuming this is my final blog, thank you to anyone who ever looked at my blog, and thank you to everyone who posted theirs; it gave me a totally new perspective on music and how I see it. Also, thank you, Mrs.Vaneman, for exploring the world with us.

  1. I love guzheng music so much; it's so pretty and really changes my mood when I'm outside on a nice spring day and seeing all of the flowers blooming. Or when it's gently raining!
I didn't realize "Cupid" was by a Korean girl group! I guess I learn something new everyday.
GATA ONLY sounds like something I'd enjoy for a late-night drive or a dance party with close friends

  2. I really enjoyed reading your blog! I also like Jamaican music; especially Bob Marley is one of my favorites. His songs always put me in a good mood. I also didn’t know that the last song you mentioned was K-pop! It’s cool how music can surprise you like that. I liked how you brought different genres together and shared your personal connection to each one.

  3. Hi! I really liked reading through your blog partly because I know 3 of the 4 songs you included but mostly because of the instrument that you included from Chinese classical music. I’ve never seen the guzheng but I’ve definitely heard it in movies. It has this magical peaceful sound to it, kind of like if time stops. I'm happy to now know about it!

  4. Going through this blog was a good one. I also enjoy listening to Spanish music, and Floy Menor is one of those I listen to at times. As I said in another blog, Bob Marley and his songs will always be enjoyable and played no matter what. Three little birds give such a joyful feeling.
